Purpose : To develop functional contact lenses for the prevention of ophthalmic diseases by manufacturing contac lenses coated with the xanthone compound of mangosteen, a natural antibacterial nad antioxidant substance.
Methods : Contact lenses were manufactured and coated with Gamma-Mangostin through IPN technology. The manufactured lenses were tested for light transmittance, moisture content, oxygen transmittance, antibacterial and antioxidant properties using ISO and MFDS standards.
Results : The Gamma-Mangostin coated contact lens has a visible light transmittance of 93%. Ultraviolet rays block more than 70% and blue light more than 30%. In the antibacterial experiment, the antibacterial properties of Gamma-Mangostin-coated contact lenses are more than five times more effective than general lenses, and antioxidants showed antioxidant rates of 17.49, 28.46 and 36.99% for each test lenses
Conclusion : Contact lenses coated with Gamma-Mangostin have superior UV and blue light blocking rates compared to general lenses. In addition, it seems to be able to prevent ophthalmic disease by showing antibacterial and antioxidant activities that are not found in general lenses.
